Originally, I was fine to just tell the people who’d told me to play this game that they were right. After another hour or so last night, that moved to telling everyone. This game rocks.
I don’t know if it’s the nostalgic feeling of playing a straight-ahead shooter with no stupid crafting, RPG mechanics or other tacked-on elements or the structure of a Doom game in and of itself (open door, clear room) but this game has me hooked. It’s fast, intense and full of raunchy violence. It’s just perfect.
It should be noted that I didn’t get the chance to play Doom 3, so this is my first foray into the series since my youth, a detachment from the game I played as a kid. Doom is full of awesome music too. Just as stuff really starts to light up around you, the metal kicks in. It’s really fluid – the game just let’s you bounce around, spend shells and stack bodies. It’s a healthy change from the everyday-tactical shooter I’m used to playing and exactly what the doctor ordered after my staggering disappointment from Fallout 4. The price tag still rests at that ‘triple-A’ value, but this is one of the rare games I’d pay for at that mark.
The game itself has a few things to keep you going – weapon upgrades, suit improvements and modifications to, for example, shoot grenades out of your shotgun keep me coming back for more. I really like the way hand grenades are handled, too. When you chuck a frag, it starts a countdown timer to allow you to just have another. You’re not wandering around looking for ammo – the focus is on awesome, fast gameplay. Also – dat chainsaw. It’s really a highlight-reel kill, every time you get to use it.
Doom is removed from the cycle of tan-coloured games I seem to buy. If it’s not WWII, it’s the War on Terror. This is really, really not. It brings me back to my early gaming days with varied enemies, environments and big-ass guns. Worth the cost of admission? Totally.
Just thought I would comment and say great theme, did you code it yourself? It looks superb!
Thank you for this unique article. I especially enjoyed reviewing it and ought to discuss it with everyone.
