TangoNovember: Review of Echo M1942 Jump Uniform from AtTheFront

Well, what can I say - I've got a thing for WWII. I could think of no better way to start off my ambitions to start reviewing gear again by first taking a swing at an item I could find almost no literature on myself before I purchased it. Between the games, stories, podcasts and tattoos, my buddies know well that I'm the WWII-guy of our group. Quite a few years ago, I became involved in the OAWWIIR group, founded by a great guy in London, ON. Some years later, as a result of my ongoing battle with Hobby-ADD, I'd [...]

Hobby ADD – Try this!

By | 2016-07-26T15:35:48+00:00 July 26th, 2016|Blog|0 Comments

Before I start talking about hobby-ADD, as I've come to call it, let me talk about something else. (ohh, that's some pretty meta-irony right there.) Above, there's some more art from Brian Wood. From a graphic novel I just finished called Channel Zero, a made-for-me story about an authoritarian police state controlled by mass media. It features hackers, phreaks and lots of other tech-inspired fantasy work that Brian is so good at creating. An immersive world that's totally worth your time - go get a copy. So, back to what we were originally talking about. Hobby-ADD, a term coined by [...]

Lessons learned (so far) from a first timer in the turkey woods.

By | 2016-05-23T12:48:39+00:00 May 23rd, 2016|Blog|0 Comments

This year, I celebrated a long-time goal. I got all of my paperwork squared away, got some gear and got into the woods. I've been wanting to for years now but a mixture of time and fear prevented me from following through. Now that my son isn't a little baby anymore, it's much easier for Mom to take care of him in the mornings, so I'm able to get out. After the season is up, I'm expecting to put some time in on the shores of the Grand River with my dad and my brother, too, so I'm very excited [...]

Finding your monkey brain

By | 2016-05-02T14:15:04+00:00 May 2nd, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

This weekend, I crossed a threshold. I went into the woods with a gun. I went into the woods with the intent to kill another living being to harvest it's meat to feed my family. Sounds kinda of cryptic, but that's exactly what happens daily inside butcheries and grocery stores, it just looks different. We're separate and insulated from the reality of our food. I'm trying to fix that in myself. In the same way that tomatoes just taste better when they're from your garden, I imagine wild meat to have the same impact. Too often, I think we're wrapped [...]

A short winter hike: a look to the future.

By | 2016-01-24T18:51:16+00:00 January 24th, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

Today, I went for a short hike. At about -3 or -4 below zero, it wasn't all that bad and didn't require any additional gear. Looking forward to many more adventures outside. It seems, these days, you have to make an effort to find adventure. What a great problem to have.

Keeping the course.

So, I have a problem. Not a real problem, but a problem none the less. "This burden's not a heavy one, but I assure you, it is present." Thanks George, Alexisonfire seems to dot my life as much as The Tragically Hip, explaining things in song that I just can't seem to find words for. I want to create. I love doing it. As a product of the internet and growing up with it, I'm fully aware of many types of media I can create. Further, I won the genetic lottery in such a way that allows me to focus [...]

Carrying Every Day – EDC and you.

By | 2015-12-21T13:49:31+00:00 December 21st, 2015|Blog|0 Comments

Like it or not, you already carry - every single day. Sometimes it's a measured decision, other times it's just what you do. EDC, or, Every Day Carry is a term that refers to the things you take with you every day. A mix, often times, of tools, writing implements and the needed materials to get on with your day, EDC is a topic like many on the internet, that floats between the hobbiest and the all-in, super serious. I guess I'm somewhere in between. Not specifically devoted to it the way I probably should be, I can tend to [...]

The Syrian Problem

By | 2015-12-17T14:17:20+00:00 December 17th, 2015|Blog|1 Comment

At some level, it feels like we're intentionally trying not to deal with this. I mean, anything I say from this point forward has to be taken with a grain of salt, as it were, because I'm not nearly smart enough to deal with this problem. What I do know; a few facts. -There are a great many displaced people who need help. They're coming from everywhere, but right now, there's a focus on Syria. -There are a great many people who have had loved ones killed, in that region, by coalition forces during the past ten years. Those facts [...]
