A round of words.

By | 2016-09-11T11:34:39+00:00 September 11th, 2016|Blog|2 Comments

Today marks the first time for a few things. For one, I'll be hosting a write-in at the Bench. I'm not sure what that means, exactly, past the expectation to have a whole bunch of people come in, sit down, charge up and write. Should be a fun thing and further, fun to get out into the community to share my own attempt at art - writing. I plan to leave about 20 minutes at the end where we can share our favourite part from what we've written today. What's more - I'm starting a writing challenge today called #ROW80. [...]

Sugar, we’re going down.

By | 2016-09-08T10:47:35+00:00 September 8th, 2016|Blog|0 Comments

You know it. Way deep down, you really do. We all do. We know when we're doing things contrary to our best interest. Be it in the form of health, our diets or our relationships, I really do believe we've got that magic-mirror inside of us. Barring the folks who have something blocking their ability to reason like this, I think a lot of what we do has some anchor in our hearts - where we know if we're really, truly working towards our best selves. Enter, the JRE. On an episode this week, Joe had a guest on who [...]

Falling off, getting on.

By | 2016-09-06T10:43:55+00:00 September 6th, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

It happens to all of us, like it or not. Waves come and go. We get off track, we get back on. The path. It's always right there, always just within reach. I think the only thing that separates us from being as disciplined as we want to be are collections of little decisions. The best (read: worst) part is, we already know in most cases that being on the wagon and in control feels really good. When I'm on top of my game, I know I am and you can see it in my stride. The little demons that [...]

ROW80, NaNoWriMo & Atlantik

By | 2016-08-21T23:55:56+00:00 August 21st, 2016|Blog|3 Comments

It's really no secret that I like taking on creative projects. Most recently, I had a script written for three episodes of a story-focused podcast called Atlantik. I only ended up putting out episode one - listen here - because after it had been chopped up, edited and refined, I realized the task ahead of lining up my characters for recording days and organizing everything was a tad unrealistic for a new dad. Somehow, I couldn't bring myself to fully drop the idea behind Atlantik. As a story, I've always been excited to develop it. The age-old dilemma is and [...]

Adventure Archives

By | 2016-08-21T12:09:28+00:00 August 21st, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

Every so often, in-between the nonsense that positively fills the bandwidth on YouTube, you find a gem. Adventure Archives is a diamond, if "outdoors" videos are the bucket of rocks. Produced by a group of friends in the states, the show is exactly that, it's a show. Reminiscent of Les Stroud's work in the sense that all of the video work is done by them directly, it must take FOREVER to complete an episode without the help of major networks. They've got the little bits, Steadicam and awesome lenses that technically set them far apart from the leagues of 'hey, [...]

A familiar friend – assignment anxiety.

By | 2016-08-19T10:51:29+00:00 August 19th, 2016|Blog|2 Comments

I just remembered, as I settled up my homework for the day. My tutor said he would have the assignment graded within a week and it's been at least ten days. I put my books away (these days, that just means folded into a pile on the kitchen table, as I'm doing the work daily now) and logged into my school's portal, to the same page I'd submitted the assignment to. There it is. "Graded." A creeping, building flood washes first into my chest. This, followed by a slight tingling in my fingers when finally, my mind takes hold and [...]

Why won’t we pay for apps?

By | 2016-08-17T11:41:04+00:00 August 17th, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

Here's a solid question. If I'm perfectly comfortable spending ten bucks on a game that I know definitively that I will never touch again after only one play (I'm looking at you, racing games) - why won't I pay for an email app? I've grown too accustomed to the idea of free applications on my mobile devices. Let's be clear though, everybody knows there's no such thing as free on the internet. If you're not paying with cash, you're probably paying with your privacy, data or even worse, you're paying with your time. When those ads pop up that you [...]

How I work: Morning Routine for a dad, business owner and creative.

By | 2016-08-16T10:47:21+00:00 August 16th, 2016|Blog|0 Comments

Want the TL:DR version? Get. Up. Earlier. I've gone through a shift over the last two years or so where I've focused in on personal development as a method to reaching goals that were once so far out of my grasp that they were more like dreams than actual, attainable statements. Most recently, I've been dipping into a period of 'optimizing' my current systems to get more out of what I'm doing. I suppose I should start by explaining that I like (read: love) a systems approach to anything. Any task, idea or event can, in my mind, have a [...]

Gord Downie: Everything we need him to be.

By | 2016-08-15T22:12:09+00:00 August 15th, 2016|Blog|4 Comments

Too often, when a celebrity falls ill, there's an outpouring of grief and warm wishes for the suffering. Something about it, though, always seems so 'tacked on' or done just because the moment presented itself. Somehow, this time, it's different. I was introduced to The Tragically Hip and by proxy, Gord Downie when I was just a little kid. My earliest memory, from a time and place I can't really describe if only to know that I was there while it happened, is dancing around with my mom while she was cleaning up our house. Bandanna around her head, I [...]

Tango November: Wall art at the range!

By | 2016-08-11T22:04:46+00:00 August 11th, 2016|Blog|1 Comment

Last night, I went to the range with my lead-loving-family and broke the cherry on my new AR. Finally, after years of building guns that look and feel like AR's, I've got one of my own and had it out to punch paper. All in all, it was an awesome night where I was able to test gear, guns and have a good time - at the end of the day, that's why I go to the range. For quite a while, I've been sitting on a new-to-me AR15. A NEA-15 that I purchased out of pure happenstance. I fell [...]
