Chest punch: a lost cultural rite

By | 2018-04-11T14:15:28+00:00 April 11th, 2018|Blog|3 Comments

Last year, I participated in the GoRuck Tough Challenge. If you want to read my after-action, check this out. GoRuck is best summed up like this; good livin'. Lifting heavy shit, getting after it and pressing forward under a brick-weighted pack for the sake of testing yourself and becoming something more. That's something I've been researching a lot lately - becoming something more. See, I've got this basic hypothesis. I believe men are losing a cultural foothold on who we are through a lack of rites of passage, dissassociation from the tribe and no 'great struggle' to fight against. I've [...]

Journaling: a blended Bujo / 5-minute method

By | 2018-04-09T00:42:09+00:00 April 9th, 2018|Blog|4 Comments

When I cracked open my 4th journal - and we'll come back to that - I was a little too focused on the system behind it. I tend to operate like that, attaching systematic approaches to the things I'm involved in. I began by researching the various page designs others had come up with for the Bullet Journal. If you've never heard of the Bullet Journal - open a new tab right here. I've since adopted a number of really low-key, minimal layouts for monthly and daily logs. Truthfully, I don't use my journal for much more than that. I [...]

Angor: Next steps for a well-received campaign setting

By | 2018-03-20T14:04:17+00:00 March 20th, 2018|Blog|0 Comments

Over the weekend, I put Angor up on Reddit. After a couple hours, I had received a bunch of really nice feedback and a couple hundred upvotes. One particular comment got me to thinking; So, are you going to try and sell Angor to a publisher/have a pay-what-you-want model for releasing this? I've thought of that since I started putting together Angor. It brings up a few things inside my head that have been an internal argument since I was a teenager. I remember when, in my first year of high-school, a teacher told me that the internet was not [...]

Up and Down and Down and Up

By | 2018-03-20T11:49:36+00:00 March 8th, 2018|Blog|5 Comments

It's been a few months since I've posted here. Maybe that's just the way this space is destined to be. The on-again-off-again relationship from every sitcom. Not as funny but almost as interesting. Since the past few months have passed, I've figured a number of things out; - I've had a more steady, ongoing diet. It's almost like, when I eat for the sake of fuel it's all good because I require performance. Further than that, though, I've really managed to connect with the after effects of poor dietary decisions. I'm tired of the 'food hangover' that comes with over [...]

ROW80 – Another go at finishing that story.

By | 2017-09-26T16:41:56+00:00 September 26th, 2017|Blog|2 Comments

If you've never heard of ROW80 - just click here. I was first introduced to the concept of NaNoWriMo a couple years ago. ROW80 appeals to me because, as they say - they know you have a life. The goals are self-directed and over a longer period of time. During this round, the timeline is in sync with the novel writing month everyone will be struggling through, but with an extra month tacked on the tail of it, to give those of us with kids, careers and the rest of it a fighting chance to keep up. Without going too [...]

Short Story – Follower

By | 2017-08-28T10:19:16+00:00 August 27th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Seven months from the first time it happened, Kelly shifted in her seat, expecting it. The first time, it was fast, fleeting. From between the shutters of her bedroom window, it seeped in like the rolling blue smoke from the end of a cigarette. She blamed it on the old house. She blamed it on an overactive, unmedicated imagination. She blamed it on her father. Twice since then, it came back. The second time it was in her bedroom again. Like a sly little fox, it crept in once more through the painted shutters. It snuck in unchecked, past the [...]

The Long Wait

By | 2017-08-17T10:08:30+00:00 August 17th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Since I'd began the recruitment process, it's been about seven months. I've done the aptitude, fitness tests. I've had the interview. I've been waiting now for nearly 8 weeks to be granted a date for a medical exam. From there, I assume I'll advance to whatever the next steps might be. Last night, I found the below video through the CAF subreddit. It couldn't have come at a better time.       [su_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBLnz2pT9Tc"]     From the time I finished up my interview and breathed a 'I think that went okay' sigh of relief, I've been left with [...]

Field Biology: Our First Maples

By | 2017-08-12T16:56:56+00:00 August 12th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Today we took a short stroll onto a trail which by my count should be all but overcome by the new houses going up in the latest big bulldozing. A shame really, so we try to get out to enjoy the trails while they're not yet over run by people. So, we packed up our new field manual - a good carry-along book on tree identification. I'd been interested in expanding the knowledge I have of tree species beyond 'that's a Maple' for some time, so I thought to grab a few pictures of leaves and bark to help me [...]

Trump, North Korea: Talking big, saying nothing.

By | 2017-08-11T23:00:11+00:00 August 11th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

Let's start out by saying flatly that I'm no press-pundit with credentials to actually mean anything. I've got just over 30 years on this floating ball of rock and, in that time, I've seen enough to know a few things. Not many, as my wry mother would be quick to remind you, but a few. I've been asking around as news of more sabre rattling comes through the headlines and main links on reddit. It gets to the point that I'm not really sure if they're just yammering at each other, or if there's any military weight behind it at [...]

gen·u·ine: truly what something is said to be; authentic.

By | 2017-08-08T17:24:23+00:00 August 8th, 2017|Blog|0 Comments

A night later, I wake refreshed but still confused. Not down, as I've kind of been these past few weeks as I attempt to 'clean my room', so to speak, but still actively trying to figure this out. My wife's words really shook me up - that's a great thing and a reflection of what a positive influence she has on me. "You're looking for genuine experiences." Yeah, I think that's the ticket. As I embark on another workweek, the meditation will be focused on this. Evacuating the senseless, meaningless interactions, items and belongings and really pegging down the stuff [...]
